NaturaLawn of America Receives Award in Recognition of Wise Waste Management Practices

2014 Recycling Award Winners

Frederick, MD (PRWEB) November 20, 2014

This is the fifth year that Frederick County has acknowledged various innovations and efforts that local business leaders have implemented to create less waste. Five organizations were selected to be honored.

The Department of Solid Waste Management commends the selected businesses for their commitment to recycling and/or waste reduction strategies. These organizations were formally acknowledged at a meeting of the Board of County Commissioners today. The 2014 winners are:

  • e-End – In addition to obtaining industry environmental certifications (R2 and ISO 14001) for their business practices, staff prioritize reuse and recycling of all materials possible.
  • Frederick Veterinary Center, LLC – Recycling is available in all areas of the practice, including materials beyond the basics, such as used medical equipment, shelving and fluorescent lighting.
  • Hallowood Retreat Center – Food waste is composted on-site, recycled-content products are sought, recycling is standard and guests are encouraged to join in efforts to help make the center "greener."
  • NaturaLawn of America, Inc. – A member of the Maryland Green Registry, "reduce, reuse and recycle" strategies are prioritized, from retail products sold in recycled-content packaging, to staff initiatives to reduce lunchroom waste and recycle.
  • Second Chances Garage, Inc. – A wide variety of materials are collected and processed separately for recycling, such as scrap metals, tires, antifreeze and motor oil. All materials that can be are reused. Donated vehicles are given new life through repair and refurbishment.

"These organizations serve as models, showing that waste reduction techniques and recycling programs can actually make good business sense," commented Cindy Johnson, Frederick County's Recycling Program Manager. "We extend our appreciation to these local leaders, recognizing that every individual effort made to waste less adds up to make a big difference and benefits our entire community."

Today's award announcement coincides with the celebration of America Recycles Day, a national event occurring on November 15 each year, dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and buy recycled-content products. The U.S. recycling rate has increased every year since 1980 and is currently 34%. To sign a pledge to recycle more, visit the America Recycles Day website. Frederick County's recycling rate for 2012 was 46.71% (according to the most recent data approved by the Maryland Department of the Environment).
