With Halloween right around the corner, and the fall season already here, it is time to decorate accordingly. Here are 9 easy ways to spruce up your space for the season.
- Glow-in-the-Dark Paint - Glow-in-the-dark spray paint will take your Halloween decorating to another level. Spray onto chicken wire and shape it into ghostly figures, use it on pumpkins, or spray anything else you can think of for an unearthly lawn ornament.
- Go 3D With Your Pumpkins - Cut pieces out of one pumpkin to make hats, horns, etc. Or, combine multiple pumpkins to create a snowman or spider-pumpkin using PVC pipe, pipe cleaners, or similar materials for legs.
- Corn Stalks - Check out your local garden center or produce stand for corn stalks sold in bundles. Use the stalks for scarecrows, as decoration for corners, or to create a festive entrance to your house.
- Play Up Your Plants - Jack-o-lanterns make great planters. Grasses can be used to look like hair, while a “spiller plant” can be made to look like guts spilling out of your pumpkin’s mouth.
- Set the Mood with Lights - Take a dozen mason jars, empty bottles, or old glasses and paint them crazy colors or patterns. Once painted, insert a few lights for unique mood-lighting.
- Carve Like a Pro - Carve something out of the back of your pumpkin to create a spooky shadow on a wall. Or, shave off layers on the front without cutting all the way through to create interesting textured patterns.
- Scarecrow - Make it a family event to visit yard sales for a scarecrow’s outfit. Match the colors of the clothes and accessories to your current decorations. Use leaves and grass clippings as stuffing.
- Eyes in the Night - Save toilet paper rolls and cut eyes into them. Then, insert a glow stick, seal off the end, and hang them in trees or bushes around your house.
- Squash or Gourds – Consider carving or painting squash and gourds instead of pumpkins this year. Gourds can even be dried and saved for more permanent decorations.
